3 Stereotypes around Security Guards

Learn how stereotypes around Security Guards are commonly false in an industry that is becoming increasingly dangerous.

Stereotype #1:

'Security Guards have such an easy job.'

In reality, Security Guards have the burden of ensuring overall protection & safety, in many cases this burden is not just an individual item or cohort, which is far from 'easy'. Security Guards are often responsible for the protection of multiple things at once, including customers/patrons’ well-being, staff, assets, buildings, and properties in any given setting.

Stereotype #2:

'Anyone can be a Security Guard.'

To work as a Security Guard in Victoria you are obliged to hold a valid Private Security Licence. To become a Security Guard, you must study a Security Operations course and pass testing/training throughout this course. Furthermore, to be s Security Guard you must have you fingerprints taken and have your application accepted by the Licencing Division in order to hold a valid licence to work in the industry. The application process can be long, and only competent candidates are awarded valid Private Security Licences.

Stereotype #3:

'Security Guards are just bouncers with an ego that abuse their power.'

Security Guards are licenced security professionals, trained in managing crowds effectively, problem solving, customer service, enforcing of security measures, and conflict diffusion. These skills possessed by security professionals create a mindset of proactiveness rather than reactiveness, promoting a safe environment for all no matter the setting.
